About Marisela

Inspiration

The inspiration for my paintings is the essential vitality of nature, through color I touch the vibrancy of existence, the dance of form animated with breath and motion. I aim to express the energy, the potency and emotion evoked by the gestures of nature, the drama, the joy, the subtleness or boldness as it manifests in each element, be it solid or ethereal, be it creature or plant. In my paintings sometimes the strokes decompose into abstraction, others they manifest as recognizable form. At times the paintings aim to reconstruct creation itself, others they travel through possible landscapes as they settle out of chaos into particular expressions and qualities of being.

Background

I was born in Mexico City, Mexico is a country fond of cultural and artistic expression, since I was a child the arts were a central part of my life. The entertainment my mother provided for us consisted of attending live symphony, theater and dance performances and visiting art museums. Since early age I found specially compelling, the power visual arts have to convey with a single “impression” a mood as profound and mysterious as our own physique. With this early exposure to creative expression, the imprint that Mexican art left in me, is very deep.

“I plunge into myself as I paint, as my eyes move through the densities of color, the surface of the painting
is the support for what comes alive in me when I participate with the dance of nature.”

Career

I began my artistic and graphic design career in Mexico City. The journey of life brought me to the US and finally to Hawaii, where I’ve lived for almost 30 years. I studied fine arts at the Autonomous University of Mexico, at the NW College of Art, and received a MFA Degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. I’ve had solo exhibitions in Mexico City; Portland, Oregon; Boulder, Colorado and Maui, Hawaii. I am infinitely grateful to Maui not only for its beauty and amazing community, but also for offering me the mental space to explore my love for fine arts.

Technique

My paintings thrive with technical and thematic experimentation. Presently I am focused on acrylics and watercolors, sometimes working with transparent layers of color with the help of mediums and resin, others building three dimensional relief and textural surfaces.
I started my fine arts and graphic designer career simultaneously, and since the beginning of the digital era, I developed wonderful digital imaging skills. I was called to explore the infinitely creative digital universe and produced a body of work consisting of digital paintings blending my photography, drawings and watercolors.
My poetry book: Water Kiss is fully illustrated with digital collages where some of the images are further developed to be displayed as pieces of art.
